Cornell “Mickey” Williams is a veteran tennis administrator, international official, and former athlete who has played a transformative role in the development of tennis in The Bahamas and across the region. A multisport enthusiast since the late 1970s, Mickey actively participated in recreational tennis, as well as bowling, softball, soccer, and field hockey.
Mickey’s administrative journey with the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) began in the late 1980s, when he joined the Council as Assistant Treasurer. Over the following years, he held several executive positions, eventually serving as President of the BLTA from 1992 to 1995. His leadership was marked by strategic development, regional engagement, and a commitment to professionalizing tennis operations in The Bahamas.
In 1993, during the International Tennis Federation (ITF) AGM held in Santo Domingo, Mickey played an instrumental role in the formation of COTECC (Confederation of Tennis of Central America and the Caribbean), helping to lay the foundation for regional cooperation in tennis development.
In 1992, Mickey earned his Bronze Badge certification as a Chair Umpire, which opened the door to a prestigious officiating career. He was selected to officiate at:
Two Olympic Games
Multiple Grand Slam tournaments
ATP and WTA Tour events
Numerous ITF Men’s and Women’s Circuits
He retired from chair umpiring in 2009, but continued to serve the international tennis community as an ITF Referee until 2022.
A founding Director of the National Tennis Centre (NTC) under then-president Kit Spencer, Mickey oversaw the Centre’s construction, which was completed in 1999. He continued to serve as a director under several administrations, contributing to facility management and long-term infrastructure planning.
Today, Mickey is dedicated to the training and certification of the next generation of Bahamian umpires, using his vast experience to raise the standards of officiating nationally. In recognition of his lifetime contribution to the sport, he was inducted into the Bahamas Sports Hall of Fame for Tennis in 2018 a distinction he describes as a tremendous honor.
