Darnette E. Weir is a committed sports administrator who played a significant role in the modern development of tennis in The Bahamas. She served as President of the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) from 2018 to 2020, becoming one of only four women to lead the Association in its history. Prior to her presidency, she served with distinction as General Secretary from 2014 to 2018.

Darnette’s leadership in the BLTA was marked by a steady focus on governance, youth development, and regional collaboration. Her contributions helped improve administrative efficiency, enhance the visibility of Bahamian tennis on the international stage, and provide opportunities for young athletes to grow through sport.

Key Contributions

  • Governance and Organizational Structure:
    As General Secretary, she strengthened internal operations, standardized reporting and documentation, and ensured alignment with both national policies and International Tennis Federation (ITF) standards.
  • Global Representation:
    During her presidency, she guided Team Bahamas’ participation in key international competitions, including the Davis Cup, Fed Cup (now the Billie Jean King Cup), and the COTECC Caribbean and Central American Circuit, helping players gain valuable exposure on the world stage.
  • Junior Development and Grassroots Expansion:
    Darnette championed the growth of grassroots programs and junior tournaments, enhancing access to the sport and supporting the development of the next generation of players and coaches throughout The Bahamas.
  • Women in Leadership: As one of only a few women to lead the BLTA, she represented progress and inclusion within Bahamian sports, inspiring the next generation of female sports leaders.

Ongoing Impact and Current Role

Today, Miss Weir remains an active supporter of Bahamian tennis.  She currently serves as Vice Chairman of the National Tennis Centre (NTC), where she continues to contribute her expertise toward facility development, program expansion, and strategic planning.

Her legacy reflects a strong commitment to excellence, equity, and the long-term advancement of tennis in The Bahamas.
