Peter Phillips, a Jamaican, was transferred to the Bahamas in 1973. He had been Jamaica's Junior Tennis champion in 1951 and 1952 and National Champion in 1957, 1959, 1960, 1964 and 1966. He represented Jamaica in the Brandon trophy from 1955 to 1962 and again in 1966 and the British West Indies in the Davis Cup from 1955 to 1959 and again in 1961 and 1966. He has the distinction of being the only West Indies captain in 1966 (but he did not play in the tie), to have led the West Indies to a victory in the Davis Cup competition - defeating Venezuela in Venezuela.
He had retired from tennis in 1967 but on settling in the Bahamas he started again in 1975 to play, and won the Nassau Lawn Tennis Club tournament in 1977, 1978 and 1979. He also won the Gym Club Championship in 1984 and a number of senior events, retiring the Charles F. Lunn memorial trophy for the BLTA Senior Veterans Championship by winning the event in three consecutive years, 1980 to 1982.
He served as Vice President of the BLTA under Bertram Knowles and while in that role introduced in 1980 the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association Yearbook which comprehensively each year covered the activity of the sport in the Bahamas. He served briefly as President of the BLTA after Bertram Knowles until his retirement in 1986 when he moved to Canada.
